our core values

history of consejo

Consejo was established in 1978 in Seattle, Washington. Consejo was originally a part of a work study project conducted by two Latino UW School of Social Work students. They identified a behavioral health need in the Latino community. Prior to its establishment, the state of Washington did not have a Latino-based behavioral health care organization or Latino-based transitional housing units. It was the first organization to base the foundation of its work in monolingual services, improving mental health care access in the state and squashing cultural mental health stigmas.
